Series of declaraciones concerning Asinay (Texas) and Cadodacho Indians. Although Cadodachos fairly friendly with Spaniards, Asinays in revolt, rejecting missionaries, killing livestock. Many Indians leaving their fields, living on buffalo 11 months of year. Indians, Spaniards testify to impossibility of conquering those Indians with resources presently at Spaniards' disposal. Cadodachos described as mas crecido- Mas benigna than Asinays. Spaniards don't consider area favorable for livestock raising. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Franciscans request at least 10 soldiers be sent to Bahia del Espiritu Santo, noting that Indians in area enemies of Europeans, and had killed French, English, Spanish and Dutch without ever being punished (7/19/1691). Military officials discuss whether expedition should press on to territory of Texas Indians or remain at Bahia (7/21/1691). Franciscan diario of trip from San Salvador mission in Coahuila to mission San Francisco de los Texas (5/16-8/20, 1691), noting- encounter with Indian groups- Mescales, Yoricas, Chomes, Machomes, Parachacas, Pamanes- living between Rio Grande, Rio Sabinos, all of who rely on buffalo, wild food gathering, none of whom hunt; difficulties traveling with livestock- cattle, goats, sheep- because of rivers in flood, poor pasturage, etc; Flora, fauna, geography, often giving Indian names for places; resources of Rio Nueces area, including many walnuts, buffalo, fish; arrival Indians, many different naciones to trade for tobacco, knives, rosaries, etc. (See 201); visit to Rancheria of payay Indians, nacion Muy grande, choma, Cibola, caynaaya Indians live along Rio Grande and are enemies of Apaches, who fight everyone except Salineros, Apaches described mui-Guerreros who fight with armed horses; chomas described as yndios que en el parraly y Nueva Mexico llaman jumanes, who hunt buffalo from source of Rio Guadalupe to land of Texas during warm time of year, returning to riverine homes during winter; arrival of ships from Veracruz at Espiritu Santo; friendly greeting by Texas Indians, who mourned death of one missionary, many others from unnamed enfermedad. Diary of Leon's expedition to Bahia del Espiritu Santo from Coahuila. Accompanied by French prisoner with many contacts among Indians, Spaniards- encounter gathering of Indians of 5 naciones - Hapes, Jumenes, xiabu, Mescales, y otra- living in casilla cuvierta de Cueros de cibola- who hang heads of enemies from poles in front of their dwellings; note petroglyphs; journey thru great stretches of Mesquite, Nopales so thick at times they have to dismount; describe Flora, fauna, especially trees, commenting on great numbers, good quality of native walnuts, and buffalo; hear of 4 French traders operating among Indians, trading knives, tobacco for buffalo hides which they transported on dogs; lose over 100 horses in stampede, of which all but 36 recovered; reach French settlement and find it destroyed by Indians- books, bones, broken arcabuces scattered thru wreckage, explore Rio San Marcos; told by Indians that French community at Espiritu Santo suffered epidemic of smallpox (viruelas) which killed more than 100, then were tricked by Indians who came from far away under pretext of desire to trade and killed French in their homes; encounter Texas Indians, some of whom accompany Spaniards back to Coahuila presidio. Elizondo entrada into province of Coahuila to Rio de las Sabinas 60 leagues north of Saltillo. Encounters various Indian groups, including some suffering from viruelas (small pox), called by names of their capitanes (See 022). Indians apparently sick, hungry, petitioning for reduccion. Describes poverty of country, noting that Indians don't know how to farm, and subsist only on raises y frutas de su tierra. Grants Indians lands along Rio de los Sabinas, advises that no Spaniards be allowed into area because of horror gran Indians have of them, nor should Spaniards be allowed to pass thru to hunt buffalo. Summary
Sierra Blanca, Sacramento Apaches come to El Paso to exchange work for food. Barrio, his band trade gourds, antelope, bison meat for corn and beans. Letter from Ugarte y Loyola stating orders to discourage open trade at presidios, be wary of friendly advances. In later letter (earlier on reel) he contemplates strengthening commerce away from presidio with trading post near Apache camp. Calvo acting as go between for Spanish, Apache Capitancillos. Report of good relations with Navajos, Comanches, Utes, Xicarillas. Only two thefts in north Nueva Mexico since November, by Natages. Concha has arrived at treaty with Gilenos. Draft of letter praising new peace, but outbreaks of fearing hostility now that Gilenos, their arch enemies are all allies of Spanish. (A. Dean, April 1989)

Summary
Series of very repetitive testimonies by Spanish subjects caught herding large number of mules and apaloosa horses, bought or stolen from Comanches and other tribes, towards U.s. territory to be sold to U.s. citizens. Many incidental, undetailed references to rebel activity. Several prisoners also caught possessing buffalo meat. Questions and reponses virtually identical for all prisoners. (A. Tukey, October 1988)

Summary
Series of very repetitive transcripts of interrogations of Anglo-Americanos captured in several parts of Texas. Many confess to trading cloth, beads, dyes, and other trinkets with Indians for horses. Others hunting for bison under contract from Cook. Spanish interrogators especially interested in information concerning General Long, who is suspected of planning attack on Spanish territories from Louisiana. All captives, which include several Negro slaves, deny any connection with Long or rebel activities in Texas. Questions and responses nearly identical for all prisoners. (A. Tukey, October 1988)

Summary
Letters between viceroy, comandante generals discussing peace negotiations with Lipanes. F.400 describes location of camps of Apache Capitancillos, some of whom have gone to rejoin their bands; mentions none are on horseback. F.401 mentions treaties with various Apache bands of Nueva Vizcaya, suggests those now seeking peace are false, should be considered a disease and exterminated . . . Subsist on war, only pretending to wish peace. detail on Spanish idea of Lipan character. F.416 mentions severe rains of October, 1792 making travel miserable. F.418-421 discusses part of real reglamiento de presidios (apparently) stating that opposition to treaties with Indians is diametrically opposed to spirit of peace Spanish are trying to convey. F.424 discusses heirarchy of bands of Apaches, good detail. F.426 mentions Mescaleras curing bison meat. F.427 discusses broad union of Mescaleros, Lipanos, llaneros seemingly for hunting together; mentions murder of Lipanes by Spanish civilians, what to do with captives. (A. Dean, October 1989)

Summary
Nava commissions Cordero to investigate rumors Mescaleros receive weapons, munitions from Spanish which are traded to Lipanes for stock stolen from Coaguila, Mescaleros then trading stolen animals with citizens , soldiers in Norte, El Paso, San Eleazario. Lipiyan Picax-Ande Ynstintle de Ugalde may be involved. Cordero to interview soldiers, citizens there. Leaders, rancherias, locations, numbers, those not reducido; horses acquired from Indians since peace established, since order issued only unbranded, unshod to be traded; how often, how many, which Lipiyanes in Norte since peace, goods traded. same to be conducted in San Elezeario, El Paso, Norte. Branded stock of unknown origins traded after peace, none since order issued; number, location, size, leaders of Mescalero rancherias, their travel, trade activities; unidentified Indians seen at Tinaja del Paisano with unfamiliar stock; Picax-Ande seldom seen in area, whereabouts unknown; few violations of peace; some small thefts suspected of Pases-Fla.
