Series of letters between Arrieta, Muniz and Noriega concerning Apache peace proposals in El Paso. Apaches claim pressure, murder of their leaders at hands of Comanches, but Spaniards fear treachery. Apaches from Sierra Sacramento, Hueco selling firewood to El Paso residents in return for maiz, saying Comanches defeated them at Paraje de San Mateo. Apaches under Chajalote seek permission to settle near El Paso. Salineros ask for peace from capitan Tobar. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Virrey's auto includes text of Bustillo y Zevallo's letter to him from Adaes presidio (11/26/1731). In response to viceregal order to move adae presidio because of Rivera's recommendations, Bustillo y Zevallos states that place Rivera picked is a swamp, and that no other location is suitable. In response to viceregal order prohibiting trade with French, Bustillo y Zevallos complies but warns that Adaes needs to trade for foodstuffs with French fort at Nachites to survive. Bustillo y Zevallos also notes that Apaches stole 70 Head of livestock, killed 2 soldiers at San Antonio presidio. States he sent 16 soldiers from Adaes, with Indian auxiliaries, to help French defend Nachites against attack by Nache Indians. Virrey marques de Casafuertes approves gobernador's actions, allows Adaes presidio to trade with Nachites for necessary foodstuffs only, orders Bustillo y Zevallos to replace 2 casualties at San Antonio presidio. Ramon notes murder of Correo Gonzalez, murder of 2 of 4 soldiers guarding Espiritu Santo presidial horseherd by hostile Indians. Informs virrey he requested help from capitan Flores of San Antonio presidio, but gobernador (at Adaes presidio) refused. Ramon fears Spaniards at Espiritu Santo will be destroyed like French were. Notes lack of basic foodstuffs, arms, horses. Pleads for help from virrey, also soldiers to replace Plazas of those killed by Indians since there are no vecinos in area to be drafted. (T. Diary of Leon's expedition to Bahia del Espiritu Santo from Coahuila. Accompanied by French prisoner with many contacts among Indians, Spaniards- encounter gathering of Indians of 5 naciones - Hapes, Jumenes, xiabu, Mescales, y otra- living in casilla cuvierta de Cueros de cibola- who hang heads of enemies from poles in front of their dwellings; note petroglyphs; journey thru great stretches of Mesquite, Nopales so thick at times they have to dismount; describe Flora, fauna, especially trees, commenting on great numbers, good quality of native walnuts, and buffalo; hear of 4 French traders operating among Indians, trading knives, tobacco for buffalo hides which they transported on dogs; lose over 100 horses in stampede, of which all but 36 recovered; reach French settlement and find it destroyed by Indians- books, bones, broken arcabuces scattered thru wreckage, explore Rio San Marcos; told by Indians that French community at Espiritu Santo suffered epidemic of smallpox (viruelas) which killed more than 100, then were tricked by Indians who came from far away under pretext of desire to trade and killed French in their homes; encounter Texas Indians, some of whom accompany Spaniards back to Coahuila presidio.
