Mendoza leaves El Paso area, encountering- 1) rancherias of Suma Indians, living on Mescal, who all ask him for help against Apaches; rancherias of Julimes Indians along Rio del Norte, described as gente politica, en la Lengua Mexicana, who cultivate corn and wheat, more than 100 of whom are baptized by Franciscans accompanying expedition; fence used to trap deer and Mule deer for hunting purposes; Jumano Indians led by gobernador Juan Labeta, who complain about Apache hostilities; buffalo and wild dogs, numerous small Indian groups from Coahuila-Texas area (See 201); settlements in junta de los Rios area. Campaign against rebels vigorously pursued; discovery of a plot to kill the governor; hanging of captured indians; substantial victories won against the rebels; indian dwellings burnt; indian rebels stranded in the sierra, perishing of cold and hunger, and wanting to descend; horses lost, dead from extreme cold and snow storm; dead horses used as food; rebels subdued. Depredations of indian rebels - their raid on a church and convent, killing priests and other persons, taking sacred ornaments and vessels; pillage of grain and clothing; appeal for help, arms and ammunition from stranded residents; frustration of attempt to transfer by rafts, to secure areas, stranded residents, because of impassable flooding of the rio del norte; movements and activities of soldiers and of non-rebellious indians. The governor orders a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the uprising. It seems that there was famine in certain pueblos; and it is said that someone spread a rumor that the governor had decided to have all the adult males of the pueblos killed, leaving only the young boys. Summary
Testimonies by cabildo de Santa Fe, officials, and citizens in fraud case against Vargas. Some 2,400 fanegas of corn never were distributed to the people; and from a scarcity of food, necesity and famine occurred. A subsequent uprising of Indian pueblos resulted (in response to Spanish encroachments) with death and destruction to Spanish and Indian alike. (R. Saba) (1980)

Summary
Elizondo entrada into province of Coahuila to Rio de las Sabinas 60 leagues north of Saltillo. Encounters various Indian groups, including some suffering from viruelas (small pox), called by names of their capitanes (See 022). Indians apparently sick, hungry, petitioning for reduccion. Describes poverty of country, noting that Indians don't know how to farm, and subsist only on raises y frutas de su tierra. Grants Indians lands along Rio de los Sabinas, advises that no Spaniards be allowed into area because of horror gran Indians have of them, nor should Spaniards be allowed to pass thru to hunt buffalo.
