Summary
Documents concern compliance with royal order of April 11, 1799 commanding that all Apache prisoners of war be sent to la Havana to prevent escape and return to Chihuahua. Details of March from Chihuahua to Veracruz (See exp. 8), medical treatment for numerous sick. Recounts escape of two Apaches, later recaptured near Tucson. Main body of documents consist of death certificates for numerous casualties of tuberculosis among Indians awaiting transfer from Veracruz to la Havana. Also concerns appeals from administrators of Hospicio de pobres, where Indians are held for shipment out of Veracruz, to receive compensation from real hacienda for feeding, housing, and christianizing of Indians. Summary
Letters discussing what to do with chaingang of Indians. Vague plans for what to do with Gilenos, Mezcaleros. Discusses reasons for decreasing meat ration to Bacoachi Apaches. Mentions treasury's accounts for other rations, corn, sugar, wheat, cigarrettes, etc. Ugarte speaks of need to be just toward Apaches while making treaty. With Chiricahuas opportunity for quick victory over all Indians was lost because Spanish skimped on treaty to save a few thousand pesos. Dare not repeat that mistake. (A. Dean, April 1989)

Reports of moco raids around Nuevo Santander. Primera compania and civilian Posse go after Indians in Sierra de Tamaulipa, kill most they find, but take one woman and one child in chaingang. Justicia de Aguayo attacks ranch of friendly Chichimecos, killing most, imprisoning some; results in uprising of 300 peaceful Indians in reduccion at Croix, who kill 4 citizens of Croix then raid Santillana. Virrey condemns action as stupid, endangering peace treaties with most other tribes. Suggests total campaign by all milicias of province, as military alone can not fight so many. (A. Dean, Jul 1990)

Summary
Three chain gangs sent from Guadalaxara to Mexico and costs expected to feed each adult and child; children may be given away for adoption to be educated and christianized; Loredo is in charge of gang that originated in Arispe consisting of escapees and he is to pick up more in Guadalaxara that are destined for Mexico City. expense records are to be kept to justify monies received in Guadalaxara for the real hacienda in Mexico. Loredo receives an escort from Guadalaxara to Mexico City. Receipts of monies spent along the trail are signed by local leaders. expense lists are on ff# 85-86. (E. Wilson, October 1989)
