Letters, autos, from Escandon for virrey concerning Indian rebels and their crimes. Indians sent by Cordillera from village to village. Some sent to Father Zuzuarregui, others to public jail in Mexico. Letters for Escandon from Olibes and Huastecos Indians requesting land near Rio tamattan as land assigned them is infertile. Documents concern compliance with royal order of April 11, 1799 commanding that all Apache prisoners of war be sent to la Havana to prevent escape and return to Chihuahua. Details of March from Chihuahua to Veracruz (See exp. 8), medical treatment for numerous sick. Recounts escape of two Apaches, later recaptured near Tucson. Main body of documents consist of death certificates for numerous casualties of tuberculosis among Indians awaiting transfer from Veracruz to la Havana. Also concerns appeals from administrators of Hospicio de pobres, where Indians are held for shipment out of Veracruz, to receive compensation from real hacienda for feeding, housing, and christianizing of Indians. Three chain gangs sent from Guadalaxara to Mexico and costs expected to feed each adult and child; children may be given away for adoption to be educated and christianized; Loredo is in charge of gang that originated in Arispe consisting of escapees and he is to pick up more in Guadalaxara that are destined for Mexico City. expense records are to be kept to justify monies received in Guadalaxara for the real hacienda in Mexico. Loredo receives an escort from Guadalaxara to Mexico City. Receipts of monies spent along the trail are signed by local leaders. expense lists are on ff# 85-86. (E. Wilson, October 1989)

Documents deal with the transportation of 47 mecosto Mexico from Tula by Fernandez and at his own expense. Indeed, he says that to cover such costs he had to sell personal articles and is asking to be compensated for such costs. A letter by Garibay acknowledges such costs and it is advised to give Fernandez 200 pesos as compensation. Other aspects of the document speak of previous resettlement of Indians and speak of such resettlement as necessary to educate them, christianize them, and overcome su Gran indocil. there is a letter from conde de Sierra Gorda about a Collera of 121 Indians and he advocates his policy of separating men from women and children. Fayni tells Bucareli of Apache-Tarahumara union and joint depredations near Chihuahua 1772-75. Bucareli notes that because laws protect Indians, individual sedicion is preferable to mass reduccion. Request that Indian prisoners be moved from overcrowded Chihuahua jail to Guadalaxara for confessions. expresses intent to construct more jails. (S. Gibbs, September 1989)
