Lengthy legal case mainly consisting of sworn testimonies of numerous witnesses and involved parties in murder of Jose Contreras at presidio of Altamira by Manuel Cristoval Guzman. Documents include a statement or confession by Guzman who initially took asylum in church to avoid apprehension, later Guzman claimed protection under the Fuero militar. Summary
Highly critical of the local missionaries, who are blamed for the poverty of the citizenry. They spend too much time with the Indians. They don't allow the Spaniards to have estancias, saying that these would interfere with the Indians Milpas. The missionaries possess more arms than do the soldiers. Requests that P. Fr. Vidania be transferred there; also that the missions weapons be turned over to government officials. (R. Perez, 1977) (A. Dell'acqua, may 13, 1987)
