Summary
Diego de Vargas informs the viceroy of the precarious among the natives; the settler population has been decimated by an epidemic, with the loss of Vital personnel such as soldiers, and others of frontier experience; there are insufficient domestic animals for the working of the land, resulting in great hardship for the residents, making them susceptible to sickness; the discovery of a metal deposit, hoped to attract immigrants, has produced disappointing results. Documents concerning transportation of Apache prisoners (28 Gandules, 56 women) to the capital, escorted by Mateos and his men. Mateos requests reimbursement for having to pay for firewood and supplies while camped at Salamanca. During March, nine prisoners became gravely ill with plague and were hospitalized at Leon. One died; Mateos accompanied survivors to Hospital. (A. Dean, February 1989)

Summary
Correspondence informing virrey of Cuellar's expedition and his success in killing large number of Chafalotes; mention of two alternatives proposed by Cuellar that will facilitate war against Indians; description of success of captain of San Buenaventura in killing of Indians at frontier of Chihuahua. Letter by captain describing in detail the slaughter. Conflict between Barrios and Cuellar, Cuellar informs of state of his troops and asks his representative Barrios for 100 men; Barrios decides not to send men and gives wrong information about his troops-copies of correspondence between Cuellar and Barrios. Later on Barrios decides to help, gives contradictory report of his troops and meets Cuellar to fight against Indians. Discussion of peace with Indians. (M. Vasquez, July 1988)
