Series of correspondence to Gobernador Escandon: tables of numbers of troops stationed at towns and missions of Nuevo Santander; notes ship carrying aguardiente run aground near port of Tampico; notes trip of virrey to Coautitlan; death of Amarillas and appointment of Caxigal de la Vega as new virrey; undetailed accounts of attacks by Xanambres and Taumaves against towns in Sierra Tamaulipas and internment of prisoners from these raids at Queretaro; undetailed accounts of celebrations at various villas in Nuevo Santander of coronation of new Spanish king, including dances, plays, mass, bullfights, loas (?), reenactment of battles between Christians and Moors, moxigangas (?), and music. Also includes letter from Escandon to virrey concerning cattle and corn harvests, notes cases of theft from Pisones by Xanambres and general state of poor relations between these tribes, migration of Apaches into northern part of colonia, and abundance of unspecified minerals in Sierra Tamaulipas. Summary
Mendinueta reports deceptiveness of Apaches; warns peace is fragile. Mentions that he retains Apache prisoners in order to learn language so that negotiations can reestablish peace. Virrey expresses sympathy for Apache insults. Orders Mendinueta to hold prisoners only until they have restored what they have taken. Acknowledging fragility of peace, virrey entrusts Mendinueta with reestablishment of peace on grounds that Mendinueta is most familiar and qualified to stabilize relations. (S. Gibbs, July 1987)

Concerns movement of horses to Adaes escorted by troops along with mail. Padre Ramirez to make visita of missions. Details of patroling of area. Horse thieving by enemies result in dead horse, soldier, and Indians and partial recovery of horses. Mission Indians used to Spy on enemies. Ripperda can't quickly comply with order to send troops to Bahia. Use of troops for guarding entrances and new fort, patroling activities and aid of mission Indians to guard presidio. Hopes of punishment of Indians, taking prisoners to bring in Indian captain. Reports on death of Indian prisoners and prisoners at captain's house.
