Originals, copies. expeditions carried out by the two following companies; primera compania de la colonia del Nuevo Santander under the command of serna for the period January 18, 1791 - March 28, 1791; segunda compania Volante de la colonia del Nuevo Santander under the command of murgier for the time period of January 22, 1791 - March 14, 1791 and additionally a unit of 72 men from 3 villas under the command of quintanilla for the period January 12, 1791 - March 13, 1791; gives details of areas explored, place names given to certain geographical areas, numbers of soldiers, supplies and weapons totals, narration of encounters with indians, information on the use of militias, nature of topography and climate; virrey conde especially happy with the last expedition commanded by quintanilla; letter stating that Pedro Jose has killed two settlers but has not been apprehended, uses the san cristoval mission for refuge; letter to vaamonde advising him to be on the lookout for Pedro Josef and naparan - misquite indians wanted for murder; letter stating that Apaches are entering the northern villages of area in late August and describes attacks so far experienced. Response to unidentified indian hostilities; military rolls which give totals of personnel in companies in area, weapons that they possess and mission, in this case being attacks on indians of Benito, pantaleon, comoteros, mariguanes, sanaquais, and pacitas; virrey tells conde de la sierragorda that in the future he is to communicate with comandante general before he undertakes an expedition against indians; mayordomo of hacienda requests and receives troop protection after pacitas steal horses from his hacienda, once there troops encountered several indian groups in the area and recovered somne of the livestock; seeks to establish missions in area in order to help pacify indians of area and exploit mines of areas to their fullest. Was killed, needs strengthened militia in area in order to defend settlements or else will be forced to abandon; indian attack in which Spanish settlers were taken prisoner; speaks of indian attack that was successfully repelled by settlers in which wounded indian was heard to say that he wanted confession. On way out of village indians took captives including children; need for better horses and weapons to fight off the indians, complete letter by justicia mayor describing situation of hostilities in area; scathing letter from Revilla gigedo to vaamonde admonishing him for his insolence in regards to some comments he had made previously on the organization of the two companias Volantes as being reason for the inability to effectively neutralize indians; report documenting indian attacks between August 5, 1791 and August 19, 1791; letter from vaamonde ordering that militias of 15 men be set up in order to explore their surrounding areas for 15 days and people of the area should provide the munitions and supplies needed for these expeditions; letter from vaamonde explaining his idea of reorganizing the two companias Volantes and the compania del punto de lamparos into 12 groups; letter telling of the arrest of indian Pedro Jose. The tribes of tacahuan and comanches appeared in plaza to fight Apaches, lipanes arrive at missions of san Jose and Espadas; lipanes from the north arrive at presidio de San Juan Baptista del rio Grande, munoz sends them back and sends two spies to make sure; lombrana and others arrive to speak of peace but commandante general not trusting them takes lombrana and others prisoner until emisaries come back with other people from this indian nation. They later escaped, while escaping a gandul stabbed commandante general who then shot him dead; in response to the belligerency of the lipanes munoz has ordered an increase of number of comanches and other indians from the north to counteract the lipanes. Summary
Concerns Indian raid on Rio de San Marcos by Lipanes after they had sent emissaries to speak with military; letter which mentions some intertribal hostilities between Lipanes and Tarcahues; information on marriage custom in which male Lipanes married female Vidais and Orcoquizacs and male Orcoquizacs marrying female Lipanas; Munoz suggests that gift promised the Lipanes be given them in order to engender trust; letter to Munoz advising him to be aware of the danger inherent in allowing Lipanes to form alliances with Indians of north; mention of a possible negotiation with Lipanes for which Ugalde is instructed to bring any captives he holds to San Antonio realizing that that this is not possible for two days because there is a war being fought by Vidays, Orcoquizacs, Atacapas, and Cocos against Tarcahues; accusation that Comanches may have been aided by soldiers in attacking Mescaleros- disputed by military, possibly Indians using uniforms of Spanish killed in earlier battles; goods given over to Comanche leader - horses, mirrors, tobacco, Vermillion. Copies. quadernos that deal with Apache lipanes, correspondence of Castro and nava, indians seeking refuge in mission, and in general are presented for the purpose of justifying an increase in troop strength; letter recording attacks by lipanes on livestock; account of how indians and military of area were organized and proceeded to recover livestock and horses stolen by lipanes in valle de Santa Rosa; investigation by lozaya on Apache attacks in san Buenaventura, reports of indian sightings near sandina hacienda; Castro explaining that if his troop strength is not increased he will be forced to seek help of comanches and he is loathe to do that because of inherent difficulties; letter discussing request of increase in troop strength and justifications for same.
