Documents include signed testimonios from hacienda owners and administrators in Nuevo Leon promising to 'pasar el Correo' from hacienda to hacienda between Saltillo and San Luis Potosi, since pueblos so far apart, explanation by governor of how this would be accomplished; letters from governor informing virrey of provincial affairs, requesting assistance on certain matters, including civil military affairs, Indian relations, disappearance of squadron commander, problems created, regarding possible British invasion, collection of a new tax, that departure for 'Corte' and to visit various 'companias' delayed due to tertian fever and several relapses; copy of virrey's statement granting establishment of monthly 'correo' between Saltillo and San Luis Potosi. Ripperda acknowledges receipt of viceroy's letters. Reports to viceroy refusal to return Comanche women in peace negotiations; appointment of interim capitan of Bahia; receipt of autos of soldier accused of killing another soldier; receipt of order to not request mission Indians for campaigns or defense; resignation of Thobar; publishing of vandos about new currency and postal service. Summary
Concerns Thobar's activities and resulting deaths in fight with Indians over horse theft. Controversy about Thobar's insubordination in not requesting fort troops and his request for detachment troops. Comanche theft of horses and oxen from missions. Describes Menchaca's use of troops and Pacheco's retreat from the Colorado River. Apaches are armed and hostile to Comanches. Mentions Demezieres' peace-seeking trip to enemy captains. Suggestions of whether or not Indians should be given arms, but discusses giving of gifts in peacemaking process. Administrative concerns over copies of letters about Demezieres' trip. Concerns need for troops and use of mission Indians to patrol because of diminishing troops due to sickness and death. Mention of Ripperda's marriage and memorial in regard to a brigadier promotion. Menchaca departs to coast with detachment to get Indians for missions of Santa Crus and padres give account of number of Indians acquired. Request for another mission in San Antonio reinforced with Indians and troops. Discussion of postal service and route and time taken to new Orleans. Indian commerce with English in guns and powder. Summary
Various documents and letters concerning Tobar's resignation as capitain of regiment of Bahia and appointment of Cazorla as his successor. Cazorla, as new capitain, complains about slowness of postal service, reports on injured soldiers due to war with Indians. Various documents related to his arrival in Bahia. Special report on Lazo's injury and inability to keep his post as second lieutenant, asks for indemnity and resigns. Cazorla informs of survey done on rivers south of Bahia to See about presence of English, and asks for boat to continue survey. (M. Vasquez, may 1988)
