Summary
Royal decree that further to the abolition of the inquisition all memorials of penalties inflicted by the inquisition - pictures, inscriptions, etc, be erased or removed from churches, convents and all public palces, within three days of receipt of the decree. Also , that the pertinent civil religious and military officials execute the order, and publish it in all required public places. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)

Royal order abolishing the inquisition and replacing it by tribunals for the protection of religion. Reasons for the abolition are given - the abuses and excesses of the inquisitors the secrecy of the system in which the accused can be condemned without ever facing his accuser etc. The Cortes decides that the inquisition is contrary to the constitution. A complicated case involving the disposition of a silver mine in San Juan de Indehe. The case concerns debt settlement, the use of sponsers or bond-holders, and relations between the church (in this case the holy tribunal of the inquisition) and the civil authorities.
