Summary
Mendinueta reports deceptiveness of Apaches; warns peace is fragile. Mentions that he retains Apache prisoners in order to learn language so that negotiations can reestablish peace. Virrey expresses sympathy for Apache insults. Orders Mendinueta to hold prisoners only until they have restored what they have taken. Acknowledging fragility of peace, virrey entrusts Mendinueta with reestablishment of peace on grounds that Mendinueta is most familiar and qualified to stabilize relations. (S. Gibbs, July 1987)

Summary
Discusses failure of peace treaty promised by Bucareli to inhabitants of Coahuila. Friendship with naciones del Norte has proven to be fraudulent, their entrance to Coahuila must be avoided or better solution must be found. Also discusses possible warfare with inhabitants of new presidios and conflict between Comanches and Lipanes over stolen horses. Description of murder of Vecino and soldier by either Comanches, Apaches, or Tancaoues. Also unsuccessful campaigns against these Indians by a Sergeant. Also refers to harm done by Taranames, Taouacanes, Tancaoues, etc. And doubtful conversion of Taranames. (M. Vasquez, January 1988)

Bustamante congratulates virrey on arrival in Nueva Espana relocation of Guajoquilla (f. 287). Cover letter and memorial and certification of gunpowder used at Guajoquilla (ff. 288-290). Berroteran acknowledges receipt of viceregal Despacho (f. 291). Virrey acknowledges Berroteran's role in making peace with Apaches (f.292). Bustamante explains tardiness in responding to unavailability of Mexico-bound letter carriers (f. 293). Virrey approves Bustamante's nominees for positions of subordinate officers at Guajoquilla (f. 294). Virrey disapproves of Bustamante's refusal to pursue Indians that stole horses, mules (f. 295). Bustamante sends virrey names of subordinate officers (ff. 286-287). Issues include Apache menace to frontier, discussion of conditions to be fulfilled by indios barbaros prior to signing of future peace treaties; disposition of captured indios infieles; reform of military organization in Chihuahua; Torija petitions virrey for command of flying company. Attached is list of haciendas in Chihuahua which includes number of families at each, plus estimate of ganado mayor y Menor, Cavallada y mulada. (J. H. Ochs, June 1988)

Summary
Correspondence from Mendoza to virrey, mostly concerning reduccion of Seri pueblos on Isla Tiburon; successful conclusion of peace treaty with Seris and Pimas, although notes some isolated Cases of continued hostilities; notes difficulties in reduccion of Papagos due to their excellent mastery of bow and arrow; recounts efforts to exterminate Apaches, to contract alliance with other tribes against Apaches; peace treaty broken by Seris leading to conclusion by Mendoza that they will never be reduced and requests for more arms to help exterminate them. Also includes documents concerning murder case against Figueroa. Mendoza orders expedition to explore area around Altar. Also includes roster of number of personnel stationed in presidios in Sonora and Sinaloa. (A. Tukey, August 1989)
