Concerns issue of whether or not to secularize 'curato' of Hoyos following death of fray Diaz Cardena; governor wants authority to select 'curas' and decide number necessary; Obispo argues that such authority lies with Franciscans, informs governor, others, of need for at least 3 'curas' in 'curato' because Indians leaving area, returning to Sierras, and that distance between Ranchos, haciendas great. Summary
Testimonies on state of missions in Nuevo Santander provide of Indians at mission and identification of their ethnic group, number of Indians christianized, inventory of livestock, political offices held by Indians, amount of land owned, description of agricultural production, quality of soil, rainfall or irrigation specified. Mention of group of Sierra tamualipan Vieja, mention of Mesquites' participation in dances, Mitotes, drinking, and Peyote use, and also past harmful behavior before making peace. Robbery by several Indian groups. Discussion of need for more soldiers to punish Indians who stray from towns and missions. Possibilities of use of cotton and sugar Cane. Also provides information of number of soldiers stationed at missions, military expenses for salaries and supplies, sinodo expenses, and commercial endeavors such as sale of hides. (L. L. Correspondence concerning observations made by Mariscal de Campo while visiting Villas in Nuevo Santander; comments on mines inspected in Tamaulipa, recommendations for various modifications in mining procedures and policies; Mariscal informs of illegally imported tobacco confiscated by his men; describes state of hacienda de Dolores where Indians receive little religious education, stresses need for such influence as well as for proper protection of Indians by all missions; itemizes taxes and other money collected at each town for real hacienda; Mariscal's companion in charge of 'repartimiento'; both men involved in selection of gobernador Interino. Summary
Officials' correspondence includes summaries of and references to documents not included in expediente; governor Munoz' 'papel sellado'; efforts of squadron to control Indians; operations at certain mines; 'librando' Munoz of governorship in face of accusations of misconduct; reinstatemnt of teniente of presidio; comandante Interino's correspondence includes accounts to virrey of state of province concerning, for example, three missions suffering small pox epidemic, general fiscal affairs, request by Cometunas for establishment of mission in area for purpose of protection, granted on condition that group live according to 'christiana politica', and militia's need for arms, as well as for officers to replace those who died; governor Velasco's correspondence to virrey refers briefly to military and fiscal affairs, establishment of 'correo' in Nuevo Leon, reduction and protection of Indians.
