Affirms Opas better at agriculture than Yumas. Describes best places to establish missions. Arrives at lagoon where Talchedunes have large settlement near Colorado River. Describes seed named equiesa which is utilized to make bread and atole. Garces sends letter to missions in New Mexico with old yabapai hoping it will arrive one day. Discusses possibility of gold before Gila River. Half of Yumas want to stop expedition and kill Spaniards but for Palmas intercession. Descriptions of Yuma mourning ceremony. Hardship on horses for lack of food and water. Richness of California land for agriculture. Discovers silver near Valley of San Jose. Anza travels to San Diego from San Gabriel to look for food stuffs. Garces and other soldiers sent back to Rio Colorado. Returns from Monterrey by different route, encountering Serra who is arriving from Mexico City. Anza is ambushed near puerto real de San Carlos and captures four Indians who are punished by flogging. Returns to Rio Colorado where Garces is waiting for him. Anza explores upper Colorado to land of Cocomaricopas. Garces remains in area to explore land of Moquis. Anza returns by way of Sutaquison where he describes architecture of big Palace and affirms that ancestors of these people established Mexico City. Series of letters from Garza Falcon concerning various presidial matters in region, including Texas. Discusses number of troops at different presidios, troubles with Indians (theft, murder), and efforts to punish Indians and defend against them. Oca put in charge of San Sabas. Garza requests that soldiers sent to Bexar be returned to San Sabas to help in defense against Indians. Inventory of supplies and official papers at Sa Sabas. Letters by Echeagaray, intermingled with draft letters from viceroy, concerning administrative affairs. Echeagaray mentions they are having a tranquil period concerning relations with enemigos and seeks to travel to San Luis Potosi to deal with deceased Brother's accounts. Larrauri draws to the viceroy's attention that he has been named teniente of the company at San Antonio Bucareli presidio. Indicates he will describe in diarios the events of a campaign in which he participated, but no such documents accompany the letter. (S. Fiederlein, 4-20-87)

Rodriguez reports on Indian crimes and depredations committed in area and discusses how to deal with them. Also discusses his military service, need for salaries to be paid, and death of chaplain and need to replace him. Letters interspersed with notes to Rodriguez by unknown official(S) on issues in letters. Alderete recounts (to Rodriguez) battle with Indians where cabo was injured and discusses actions taken against Indians. Discussion of behavior of different Indian groups (Lipanes and Mescaleros), Indian interaction with Spanish, and Indian trade I weapons with English. (S. Fiederlein, 4-3-87)

Cancio recommends to viceroy persons for positions of capitan,teniente, and Alferez in cavalleria miliciana he established at Monclova. Appointments made by officials in Mexico and notification sent to Cancio. Further list of personnel for cavalleria on F. 166. More on this matter on ff. 169, 170. Other correspondence from official (identity unknown) in Mexico to Cancio concerning administrative affairs, including pertrechos de guerra, reduccion de los indios Apaches, military campaigns against Indians, military regulations, auditor de la guerra, transfer of Barrios and Cancio, illegal commerce, wrongdoing by Barrios, and construction of carcel. Letter to Cancio concerning Indian activities in Coahuila, desire for peace of some Indians, troops available to deal with Indian threat -- orders and plans for action, and attacks by Tejas and Cumanchas against Apaches.
