Correspondence concerning hold up of salt in Bahia and necessity of bringing it from somewhere else, also request by Tovar to retire for some months due to illness and accusation of Ripperda's pretentions regarding peace with Indians and his lack of assistance to Tobar. Copies of correspondence between Indians around Rosario and Guadalajara; organization of Mariscada and payment to soldiers; mention of building of church and complaints by Tovar of not receiving enough men or artillery to fight Indians. Extract of letter by Tovar request for gunpowder and men. Note mentioning documents found inside English ship. Responding to news Yaqui unrest, alliance with suaguis in Monte, Corbalan describes his trip to Suagui, Huirivis to hear/answer Yaqui grievances, including 1) abuses Indian labor; 2) rumors forced labor California peninsula. Yaquis refusal to to migrate there; 3) imposition tribute; 4) Spanish attempts to have Mayos remove salt from Yaqui lands. Corbalan -1) assures Yaquis all labor to be paid for according to law; 2) attempts to arrange collection tribute in form maize, beans, wheat, garbanzo, salt as painlessly as possible; 3) promises to pay Yaquis for salt brought to Torim granary. Describes distribution products community fields, including charity, church maintenance, public works, reserve for seed. Discusses salt industry. Summary
Discourse between the governor of Sonora and the viceroy concerning various matters of provincial administration as to absent viceregal proclamations concerning issuance of new coinage, mail franchises, and announcement of birth of Infante Carlos Clemente (ff. 309-315). Concerning gubernatorial visita Colonel of provincial militias of Pardos y Blancos of several jurisdictions to Juan Antonio Caneda, Vecino of Rosario; brief letter, written at Mazatlan stating that, Sastre, as governor, will protect and give assistance to missionaries, destroy abuses committed against Indians... etc. Letters written at Culiacan and Alamos discuss order to send viceroy intendente Corbalan's financial account of military expedition of Sonora; response to viceroy's order that said intendente make visita of mines of province; formation of flying company under command of O'Conor to put down Indian unrest in Chihuahua (See below); governor's suggestion that if Indian named Calixto does not mend his rebellious ways, then prison sentence be considered (315-335). Letters written at Horcasitas discuss governor's order stating that copy of letters from presidial commanders be sent directly to viceroy (336,337). Sastre suffers stroke effecting right arm and leg (339,340). Summary
Informes concerning spiritual and temporal life at missions in upper and Lower Pimerias; included is number of inhabitants, births, deaths, etc; means of livelihood of inhabitants, and religious state of affairs. Documents describe depredations due to inhospitable climate and Indians (i.e. Apaches), and also discuss feasibility of uniting outlying populations into larger groups to facilitate civil, religious administration. Informes written in response to order and carta de cordillera sent by viceroy, and president of colegio de Santa Cruz de Querataro, respectively. (J. H. Ochs, July, 1987)
