Rivera, prisoner in Obraje de Encimillas, apparently testifies against his Former cronies, an ethnically mixed group of gente de Razon, mulattoes, Tarahumara Indians from all over the province, who stole everything from silver to livestock and traded with indios enemigos, the Apaches. Jose Sanchez, a blacksmith, is imprisoned for debts. He causes much trouble in the jail, and escapes in order to liberate 2 women from the women's jail. They decline. Nothing much results from the incident, but the testimony of various prisoners gives an interesting insight into this facet of Colonial society, including the racial overtones. (R. Perez) (1977)

Jose de Valenzuela, a mulato Blanco who passed as a mestizo, is banished from Parral, never to come within 100 leagues. All because he was caught in his lover's house by her grandfather, both of good Spanish blood. The hue and cry raised was due more to Jose's ethnic situation rather than for any crime he committed.
