Three letters and a brief report providing data on the military presidios in Sinaloa and Sonora. The first gives a detailed description of the new presidio of San Miguel de Horcasitas and surrounding area. The second and short letter tells Parrilla's plans for dealing with the Seri Indians. An extremely important letter from the Jesuit Father provincial de Oviedo to viceroy and auditor de guerra marques de Altamira in which he presents an analysis of the Indian problems in the north- particularly the Apache incursions and outlines a grand strategy for expansion and founding of a new presidio in the Gila, Colorado River area. Additional comments are made concerning difficulties of military logistics, Apache tactics, etc. And ends with comments on the civilian politics of the provinces and recommends that a visitador be sent to clear up divisions and reorganize the administration. Complaint about Indian attacks at San Pedro de Alamos and Parras and the generally poor quality of defense offered by neighboring presidios. Complaint pointedly laments that conde de San Pedro del Alamo has not lived up to his end of the bargain as concerns his financial support of regions defenses. (T. Naylor) (1977)

Report by hacienda real concerning alleged misappropriation of funds and misrepresentation of mission operations by society of Jesus missionaries. Visitador Galvez accuses Peninsular Californian priests of embezzling money from crown by claiming expenses on non-existant presidios, missions and Indian labor. Galvez charges mis-use of funds in many frontier provinces of New Spain, California, Cinaloa and Sonora. Attached are statements supporting charges. Neuman notes decline of presidios due to shortage of soldiers but doesn't feel there is risk of a new uprising in the region. Discusses Carichic church and notes that more than 1000 pesos of silver stolen 2 years ago. Mentions need for corn to feed Indians.
