Series of documents concerning numerous Mescalero raids due to stationing of soldiers in presidio del Norte. Ugarte complains to Florez that he has not received message from Ugalde concerning mobilization of troops in el norte against Mescaleros. Florez upset because he believes animosity between Ugarte and Ugalde results in bad governing of province. Other documents deal with Revilla Gigedo giving free hand to Ugarte with respect to troops without cooperating with Ugalde; discussion of plans to have monthly military campaigns against Mescaleros and Gilenos; attempts to use peaceful Mescaleros against enemy ones; discussion of forming Indian auxiliary troop of Opatas, Taraumares, and Zumas. Summary
A Series of letters written by Vaamonde and virrey concerning a promotion sought by Vaamonde and a dispute over a tax (Media with the way his petition for promotion was subverted by rumors and innuendos, his feeling that the dishonor caused to him and his family by his continuation in his current post may be the cause of his resignation, virrey's response that no action can be taken until the legal proceedings related to the case are concluded, Vaamonde's procurement of inspector Nava to conduct thorough investigation of their allegations of impropriety and thus clear his name, the impossibility of his being able to provide for family and other obligations if he is not exempted from the, media annata tax imposed on his salary, cites his predecessors exemption from tax and seeks the Same, virrey's response that his request is reasonable but that the matter is not within his domain, Vaamonde's contention that the area under his control is unproductive and does not provide a supplement to finances of Nuevo Leon. A Series of letters from and to the governador of Nuevo Leon, Manuel Vaamonde, and the virrey of Nuevo Leon which discuss and an account named fraudes del herario and to foward these orders as well as talk of involving the judiciary in this matter, receipt of a royal edict not to commence the, ramos de R.tas, order prohibiting sales transactions that do not verify the purchasers true identity, an inspection made by Gutierrez and documents handed over to him at that time, the Former virreys orders to have a military company in Nuevo Leon ship their armaments to another company having a campaign; hostility between civil and military officials expressed in the following manner - he is my captain but in name only. Summary
Series of documents dealing with Mescalero uprising in Coahuila, resettlement of some to Cohahuila, and desire among Ugarte and Ugalde for better cooperation. Ugalde requests assistance of some of Ugarte's troops for the better control of Indians in the area. Ugarte agrees to lend troops although this may negatively affect his control of the Indians in his jurisdiction. Many of the letters deal with discussion of the time and place for meeting between the two commanders. Both express good will toward each other and express benefits that may result from such meeting. Series of documents dealing with the resettlement of peaceful Mescalero Apaches. Discussion of animosity between Mescaleros and Gilenos. Other letters deal with Ugarte's dissatisfaction with Ugalde's treatment of Mescaleros. Argues that Ugalde lies with respect to many matters concerning such Indians. Letter of February 16, 1788 discussion of Ugalde's threats to Indians; Ugarte complains that Ugalde can not be controlled. Letter of January 31, 1788 discussion of Ugalde's request that all peaceful Mescaleros move to Coahuila or he will move them by force; Mescaleros are upset and some Gilenos want them to revolt against Spaniards. Correspondence in which Ussel y Guimbarda communicates news governorship; drought occurring in Nuevo Leon, its detrimental effects on corn crop, cattle, squadron well-dressed thanks to Urresti, Siguis attacking frequently along Rio Blanco; Indians at missions in governor's charge behaving peacefully, converting, mine at Yguana producing, though silver scarcer, administrative problems at mine; establishment of British 'comercio' along coast; 'libretas de Vita et moribus' of presidio officers, Urresti, Martiarena, Queclas; inspection records of compania de dragones of same presidio; letters from virrey responding to those from governor and others.
