San Antonio de Padilla, Mexico, villa del Nuevo Santander. January 8, 1749. 72p. Informes, relaciones. Signed, copies.
Summary
In a Series of letters Escandon reports his advances in the colonization of the Seno Mexicano. He describes one by one the settlements that were founded, the number of families and soldiers that were left in each, the reaction of the Indians, etc. Due to the violent reaction of Indians and to previously unnoticed environmental disadvantages, not all the intended foundations are effected. New areas are explored and further foundations are suggested. All the letters are commented by the marques de Altamira (the auditor de guerra) who shows total support to Escandon and advises virrey to send reinforcements to the new villages for them to survive. Villa de valles, aquismon, Mexico. March 8, 1746, March 21, 1748. Letters, autos. Originals.
Summary
Rodriguez, Caudillo of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad de las Canoas, asks for a priest to be sent to preach to the Chichimecas. He also wants to resign his post because he is afraid of being murdered by the Indians. Authorities order him to stay, telling him they will send soldiers to reinforce his position. These documents are included as a proof related to the report that follows, which analyzes in detail Escandon's settlement proposal for the seno Mexicano, including his plan of reoccupying las Canoas (also called San Jose Tanguanchin). Special attention is given to the possibility of exploiting several resources in the area, as salt (describing a method for its extraction), wood (for boat-making), minerals, etc. The strategic advantages of the enterprise, its impact upon the communications network, and its financial cost for the real hacienda, are all carefully analyzed. In the final part, the concrete steps that are necessary to take for the execution of the project are considered. (A. Nielsen, November 1989)

Relacion of the first expedition to the seno Mexicano by Jose de Escandon
Author(s)
Escandon, Jose de (Coronel)
Date
10-26-1747
Documentation
Queretaro. October 26, 1747. 100p. Relacion. Signed.
Summary
This is Escandon's final report about his expedition to the seno Mexicano, the area of the worthwestern coast of the were involved, how many soldiers were provided by each military company, the geography with special emphasis in potential resources which could facilitate future settlement (wood, minerals, arable land, irrigation potential, salt, possibilities of communication, etc.), and the Indian groups, with names and gross estimates of their numbers. He refers to a map that was attached to the document, but now is missing. The last part of the account is a plan of settlement, recommending the foundation of 14 villages. The advantages of the proposed locations are described, both from the point of view of the prospective settlers, and for the general policy of the state. He finally suggests where the financial resources for such enterprise could come from. (A. Nielsen, October 1989)

Tamaulipa la vieja, voca de Santa Rosa, Mexico, Queretaro. January 30, 1747, April 20, 1747. 30p. Letters, relaciones. Originals, copies.
Summary
Escandon reports his advances in the exploration of the northern territory, describing the landscape, resources (lands, salt, minerals, woods, water sources, etc.) and Indian groups. He underlines the convenience of founding a village in a Valley called Voca de Santa Rosa. This proposition is well received by the authorities, who decide to effect it in the near future. Concluding the trip, Escandon recommends authorities send missionaries to preach in the area. The authorities are interested and continue to support the undertaking. (A. Nielsen, October 1989)
