Summary
2 unfavorable letters concerning new missions of San Xavier. First (7/20/1749) notes murder of 2 soldiers, theft of horseherd at hands of Apaches. States that River either floods everyone out or dries up. Claims that despite holy zeal of missionaries, Indians didn't want to work or sow fields, but instead pursue trade between French and Spanish, moving on to Adaes, finds many buildings in ruins, not repaired because of lack of people. Summary
Soldier from Rio Grande del Norte presidio tells of murder of Antonio Gonzalez (Correo) by Indians 14 leagues from San Antonio, detachment led by capitan Flores fails to catch up with Indians, but military officials skeptical murder perpetrated by Apaches, despite Apache-type arrows. Apaches use saddles while murderers of Correo, according to soldier, rode bareback (montado en pelo). Furthermore, soldier frightened them away merely by showing his arcabus, such timidity also uncharacteristic of Apaches. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Informs virrey he requested help from capitan Flores of San Antonio presidio, but gobernador (at Adaes presidio) refused. Ramon fears Spaniards at Espiritu Santo will be destroyed like French were. Notes lack of basic foodstuffs, arms, horses. Pleads for help from virrey, also soldiers to replace Plazas of those killed by Indians since there are no vecinos in area to be drafted. (T. Franciscans request at least 10 soldiers be sent to Bahia del Espiritu Santo, noting that Indians in area enemies of Europeans, and had killed French, English, Spanish and Dutch without ever being punished (7/19/1691). Military officials discuss whether expedition should press on to territory of Texas Indians or remain at Bahia (7/21/1691). Franciscan diario of trip from San Salvador mission in Coahuila to mission San Francisco de los Texas (5/16-8/20, 1691), noting- encounter with Indian groups- Mescales, Yoricas, Chomes, Machomes, Parachacas, Pamanes- living between Rio Grande, Rio Sabinos, all of who rely on buffalo, wild food gathering, none of whom hunt; difficulties traveling with livestock- cattle, goats, sheep- because of rivers in flood, poor pasturage, etc; Flora, fauna, geography, often giving Indian names for places; resources of Rio Nueces area, including many walnuts, buffalo, fish; arrival Indians, many different naciones to trade for tobacco, knives, rosaries, etc. (See 201); visit to Rancheria of payay Indians, nacion Muy grande, choma, Cibola, caynaaya Indians live along Rio Grande and are enemies of Apaches, who fight everyone except Salineros, Apaches described mui-Guerreros who fight with armed horses; chomas described as yndios que en el parraly y Nueva Mexico llaman jumanes, who hunt buffalo from source of Rio Guadalupe to land of Texas during warm time of year, returning to riverine homes during winter; arrival of ships from Veracruz at Espiritu Santo; friendly greeting by Texas Indians, who mourned death of one missionary, many others from unnamed enfermedad. Testimony of Indian woman named Maria de la Encarnacion, kidnapped by 2 Indians and one Mulatto, taken to cave, where she witnessed the murder of nearby ranch hand, who the 3 captors lo desnudaron y lo degollaron los Dos indios con un Belduque y el Jose (the Mulatto) Le tuvo de las Piernas. investigators however find no trace of the mutilated body in the cave, nor hear of any murder from anyone else and begin to question Maria's veracity and motives. Summary
The justicia mayor, hearing that a woman has been shot with a trabusco (blunder buss), rushes to the scene of the crime. It develops that Juana Vasquez, entering the house of Antonio Martinez, found Fransisco playing with a trabusco. They exchanged a few words about shooting, at which point the trabusco fired, hitting Juana in the knee. The wound being mortal, Fransisco (mulato age 10) is put in the carcel. He is allowed to leave as soon as it is determined that there was no evil intent and Silbestre Gonzales agrees to not press charges. (P. Hayes) (1977)

The persons listed below are wanted dead or alvie for the robbery and killing of 3 men at la Cienega de los Olivos (including the priest of the Santa Cruz Partido). The gobernador decrees that all capitanes de presidios, Alcaldes, etc, shall be ready to apprehend the criminals. Rewards are offered. Fransisco Lugo breaks out of jail after capture. Antonio Saenz is implicated, but Joseph Perez of the real presidio del Paso del Rio del Norte says the Antonio Saenz fighting indios barvaros in his Jurisdiccion must be another man. (P.
