They deny these charges and ask for an authorization to continue exploiting them. The same area is also claimed by the hacienda Nopalitas, that has been using it for grazing mules. Several persons are called to declare, and two inspectors are sent to the area. Finally the authorities order Navarro and Santos to abandon the mines. (A. Nilesen, January 1990)

Mexico. San Xavier presidio. September 25, 1753 - March 4, 1754. 120p. Autos. Originals. Signed.
Summary
Begins with review of previous testimonies and conclusions drawn. All witnesses believe Colorado River to be the boundary between the two territories. Barrio believes Misisipi (Sic) River to be boundary. Testimonies are considered hearsay and not conclusive. Governor of Texas deems necessary to establish boundary between territories and move French presidios from la Isleta to Nachitos. Questions discussed; engineer to survey boundaries, squadron of 20 soldiers and one official to observe the French, wine and aguardiente trade with French, 36 French companies each of 50 men and 100 swiss men, slaves fleeing French masters, Frenchman San Denis bestowing titles of rank on Indians in Spanish territory, French lenguarazes in Spanish territory. French are described as machinaciones, wanting to trade with anyone and that the only way to control them is by populating presidios with more Spaniards. Ff. 253 - 264 junta de guerra y hacienda discusses same as aforementioned including; one-third advance on pay to soldiers; governor of Texas to determine amount of land usurped by French, names of French towns and presidios established on Spanish territory. All witnesses believe the French occupied lands from 1734 - 36, no new towns have been built, French trade gunpowder, clothing, etc.., with Indians in Texas. Many Indian tribes ally with the Texas Indians and the French. These same Indians consider the Spanish the enemy. Ff. 264 - 275 junta de guerra y hacienda discuss and resolve the following eight points. The governor of Texas should inform commander of Nachitos to return to his Side of the Colorado River, the boundary. The governor will not be sent engineers to map and restore usurped land. A twenty-man squadron with one official will not be sent to the San Pedro River to observe the French. No decision yet as to whether the Texas squadron will be reinforced as the Nueva Veracruz squadron, only a break in relations could decide that. Wine and aguardiente trade with the French desired due to the cold winters is prohibited. Decree proclaiming black French slaves free is prohibited as provocation of the French. Spanish Indians in Texas are not prohibited to trade with the French as the Spanish want to keep the Indians happy and possibly sway the Indians to trade with the Spanish. The second part of this point decides to prohibit the French from bestowing titles of rank on Spanish Indians. The final point permits the French lenguarases to remain in Spanish territory so as not to provoke the French. (E. Wilson, January 90)

Coahuila. October 29, 1788-March 16, 1789. 108p. Letters. Original, copies, signed, unsigned.
Summary
(See preceding folios for establishment of issues discussed here.) Fueros informed of replacement, acknowledges arrival of Carmona, who is to occupy governorship of Coahuila until Gutierres available; Ugalde confronts Fueros with evidence of personal incompetency; Fueros' 'escolta' for trip to Mexico discussed; Fueros defends honor, counters accusations in lengthy missive to virrey (consists of 106 'capitulos' (folios 90-134), follows no obvious thematic sequence, possibly response to enumerated charges or specific 'borradores'), mentions political and military successes, explains actions regarding provincial and military affairs (names, places, campaigns mentioned), especially relations with Indians of the region (details vague), places blame for some errors elsewhere, notes weaknesses of men appointed to replace him, argues (#29, folio 104) that Ugalde's motive 'no Es otro que quitar a los que no Se conforman con su particular modo de pensar.' (issue continued in sequence 5) (L. Kerr, February 1989)

Documentation
Provincias Internas. June 19, 1773-July 28, 1786. 132p. (Approx) Relacion, decretos, ordenes, oficios, letters. Signed, unsigned, copies, originals.
Summary
Correspondence between Croix, virrey, king, Galvez, others, in which determined that 'secretarias' of comandancia general have same right to privileges, salaries, promotions within 'real hacienda,' as 'secretarias' of virreynato. Issue begins with Croix requesting that virrey send copies of all reales Ordenes, etc. Regarding structure, treatment of secretarias in virreynato in order to 'extenderlas en los Propios Terminos' to those of comandancia general. Hierro advises virrey (See marginalia of Croix letter), confessing that extent of Croix's, secretarias' rights unclear, that Croix has promoted independence of region but now wants financial help from virreynato. Previous 'reales Ordenes' reviewed in order to solve dilemma; Croix, and officials whose futures rest on decision, plead with virrey. 'relacion de Merito,' recommendations, brief employment histories of several secretarias provided by Croix, Corvalan in hopes of promotion. Galvez determines that secretarias of comandancia general deserve same salaries (increases to come from 'fondos sobrantes' in virreynato), eligibility for promotion within virreynato; king, not virrey, will consider promotion of officials from comandancia general. 'estado' (folio 62) lists present and proposed salaries of secretarias. (last 32 folios of sequence (folios 32-64) contain many duplicates of decretos, letters, etc. Seen earlier in expediente. See sequence 6 for continuation of issue.) (L. Kerr, April 1989)
